Announcing the Fall 2025 Financial Independence Scholarship Winner

The Morgan Franklin Foundation (MFF) is proud to announce the recipient of our Fall 2025 Financial Independence $1,000 Scholarship: Laura Rayon Chavero, a current college student at Tulane University.

This scholarship was open to all MFF Fellows who are currently enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a post-secondary educational institution. Each application reflected the ambition, perseverance, and commitment to personal growth that we aim to support through MFF. Laura’s submission stood out for its clarity of purpose, depth of impact, and genuine dedication to giving back.

About Laura

Laura is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Behavior and Management Studies at Tulane University, where she has maintained an impressive 3.7 GPA while balancing full-time work, school, and family responsibilities. Her academic and professional discipline recently earned her Tulane’s Staff Excellence Award (2025) for her accuracy and dedication as Business Manager for the Tulane Law Journals. In this role, Laura manages budgets, payments, and reconciliations—ensuring that financial operations support both students and their publications.

Commitment to Service and Innovation

Beyond academics and work, Laura’s story is defined by compassion and initiative.

She founded Dahlia’s Costume Closet, a community project that provides free costumes to children so families can enjoy Halloween and local events without financial stress. What began as a simple idea has become a meaningful way to bring joy and inclusion to families in her community.

Laura also created Prism, a coordinated care app designed to help families of children with special needs track therapies and streamline communication between doctors, teachers, and parents. Inspired by her personal experience advocating for her autistic son, Prism reflects Laura’s determination to turn challenges into solutions that support others.

In addition, she developed the Dahlia Car Seat, a Bluetooth-enabled child safety seat that alerts caregivers if a child is left unattended in a vehicle. Presenting this idea through Tulane’s Innovation Institute demonstrated how lived experience can drive innovation that protects lives.

Laura further gives back by volunteering with the Sundance and New Orleans Film Festivals, supporting event coordination and guest services while staying connected to the arts.

Why Laura Was Selected

Laura’s essay, Achievements and Commitment to Giving Back, exemplifies the values at the heart of the Morgan Franklin Foundation: financial responsibility, resilience, innovation, and a strong commitment to community. Her ability to balance academic excellence, professional responsibility, and service to others—while transforming personal challenges into impactful solutions—made her an exceptional choice for this scholarship.

Congratulations, Laura

On behalf of everyone at the Morgan Franklin Foundation, congratulations to Laura Rayon Chavero on being named our Fall 2025 Financial Independence Scholarship Winner. We are honored to support her educational journey and look forward to seeing the continued impact she will make in her community and beyond.
