How much you get paid depends on a lot of factors, including your skill set, the demand for the skills you have, and what other people are getting paid. ~ CrashCourse
Jobs and careers enable us to earn enough money to support ourselves and our families. As you work towards financial independence, it is important to align your job or career with your current and future needs. Here are three things to consider when looking for your job or career:
- Gather Information – It is important to gather sufficient information about possible jobs or careers so you can make an informed decision. This information may include the wage or salary and benefits associated with the job or career. Another important factor may be work/life balance, and it may be necessary to consider the cost of relocating to improve job opportunities, the ability to earn a higher salary, and explore lifestyle choices. A great place to find this type of information is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Seeker website.
- Lifelong Learning – Being a lifelong learner is one way to keep your knowledge and skills current as well as keeping your job satisfaction higher. You may want to consider future job opportunities that may require more education or job training so you can earn more income, obtain a promotion, or gain more work responsibility. Education can come from a variety of sources including attending in-person or online workshops or classes, obtaining industry certification(s), and reading material from industry-specific publications.
- Job Satisfaction – You may find a job no longer gives you a feeling of fulfillment or enjoyment. You may become dissatisfied with your job or career path because you haven’t received the expected benefits or because your interests or circumstances have changed. In that case, you may decide to change jobs or careers; other jobs or other careers may be more suitable. This will lead you back to gathering information on possible opportunities.
In addition to the work itself, it is important that you consider the benefits beyond a paycheck such as personal pride, self-worth, and stress level.
